Large Diameter - project update
May 2005

Pipelife Norway supplies large diameter PE Pipes for the desalination plant in Cartagena, Spain.

Pipelife Norway was awarded the supply of the new brine outfall for the desalination plant which the Spanish Administration constructs in San Pedro del Pinatar, (Cartagena), located in south-east Spain. The supply and install contract was awarded to the Spanish contractor NECSO, which decided to place the order for the 4800 m long ø1400 mm brine outfall with Pipelife Norway. The main reason for choosing Pipelife was the unique capacity to supply the pipes in long lengths by tug boat, thus reducing the welding works on site as well as the installation time to a minimum. Additionally, Pipelife Spain's very competent commercial support played an important role in the success to receive the order. The order was placed in October 2004 and the production of the pipes took place from November last year until end of January this year. After the flange connections were assembled on the pipe ends in February, the record wide tow, with 10 sections of OD 1400 mm pipes, each 480 m long, left the plant in Stathelle, Norway on February 19, 2005. The delivery arrived according to schedule on March 8, 2005 in the Escombreras port in Cartagena. A number of special accessories were also supplied, like T-branches and bends.

The contractor NECSO does currently manufacture and install the concrete ballast weights on the pipe sections and the installation of the brine outfall shall take place later in the summer.

The first big project delivery of OD 2000 mm PE pipes for an intake pipe system for a fish farm project in Galicia, Spain is now completed.

The success for Pipelife in the Spanish market continues: in January 2005 Pipelife Norway signed a contract for the supply of an intake pipe system for a fish farm expansion in Xove, (Galicia) for Grupo Pescanova. The need of fresh sea water for the future fish farm expansion is so enormous that the consultant originally considered 4 numbers of intake pipes with OD 1400 mm pipe, but concluded that a twin pipe system with Pipelife's new OD 2000 mm pipe has major advantages. The twin pipe solution gives the same flow but with a considerable saving in pipe and installation costs. Therefore it was great news for Pescanova and their consultant Edin Ingenieria to learn that the OD 2000 mm PE pipe, produced and delivered in long lengths, is now available from Pipelife.

The pipe delivery consisted of totally 2 x 486 m + 90 m OD 2000 x 76,9 mm SDR26 PE80 pipe for the near shore part and 2 x 540 m OD2000 x 66,7 mm SDR30 PE80 pipe for the deeper sea part. The pipes were delivered as a sea tow in 4 sections, with the 90 m long sections connected to the 540 m long pipes. Additionally 2 numbers of OD 2000 SDR26 segments welded and flanged 57 degree bends, 2 numbers of OD 1000 mm inspection manholes and 6 numbers of OD 1400 mm intake risers were included in the delivery. The accessories were delivered on 4 lorries.

The pipe was produced in Stathelle, Norway on the brand new ø2 m production line from mid-January to end of February. The pipes were prepared with the flange connections ready assembled on at the plant, and this work was completed mid-April. The actual delivery took place in mid-May and the pipes arrived in the Xove harbour on May 20, after 8 days on the sea from Stathelle to Xove in Galicia (North-west Spain).

The pipes are to be installed during the summer / autumn 2005 and the project is scheduled to be completed early 2006.

Again, the excellent cooperation between Pipelife Spain and Pipelife Norway has resulted in the first 2m pipe project delivery for Pipelife! We however expect more of the same in the future..

Pipelife Norge AS shall supply the intake pipe system for the Abutaraba Desalination Plant Project in Libya.

The confidence in Pipelife's long length concept and the references from the desalination industry helped to convince the French desalination plant contractor SIDEM (part of the Veolia Group), as well as the Libyan Client GECOL, to decide to use PE pipes delivered in long lengths for the intake pipe system needed for the Abutaraba Desalination Plant in Libya. Abutaraba is located on the Mediterranean coast south-west from Benghazi.

The supply contract signed between Pipelife and SIDEM, covers the supply of two intake pipes, each 639 m and 649 m long respectively, in diameter 1400 mm, SDR26 PE80. The pipes shall be supplied with flange connections ready assembled on the pipe ends to the job site. This way no welding or other services from Pipelife are required locally. The pipe delivery is scheduled for April 2006, when the marine contractor shall be ready for pipe installation.
