Successful installation of outfall pipes in Croatia
January 2005
After some delays due to tough weather conditions, finally on 8th of December the Sibenik outfall pipe has found its place on the sea bottom near the island of Zlarin. Over 5 km of pipes (OD 1200 mm / SDR 26 / PE 100 / PN 6.3 bars) with 406 m long diffuser were installed at quite significant water depth (61 m at the end of diffuser).
Installation was conducted by skilful team from POMGRAD ENGINEERING LTD, a company from Split Croatia. The whole process was managed and supervised by domestic (Mr. Niksa Musulin, General Manager of Pomgrad and Ms. Ana Ivancic, Project Leader) and foreign experts (Mr. Torstein Langgard, Project Manager from VEIDEKKE, Norway).
Sibenik Sea Outfall is part of a larger scheme that has the aim to resolve the high priority environmental questions for the region of Sibenik that has very ambitious tourist-plans. We can proudly say that, together with other participants, Pipelife gave significant positive contribution to fulfilment of these environmental plans of the town of Sibenik.
For many reasons, Sibenik Outfall Project was a special project for Pipelife Norge AS and other participants:
- Beside pipes, Pipelife Norge has delivered a complete design package that includes evaluation of the main project, sinking procedures, supervision of sinking procedure and client's education in outfall maintenance. The package was produced by the best European and local consultants in this field, a team that was assembled by Pipelife Norge AS.
In order to make design package more affordable for the client of the project, Pipelife Norge has provided support for this project from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, and that support was fully transferred on the customer and Client of the project.
- Pipe installation has been executed in highly skilful and brave manner. The pipe was installed in 3 steps (sections). The pipe sections were connected on the sea surface, and that means that already sank pipe had to be arisen up on the surface in order to be connected with new pipe section. Without any problem, this complicated procedure was executed twice in this project.
- Special achievement was made concerning installation of diffuser section. For the first time ever, according to our best knowledge, diffuser section was sank together with the pipe section and in a manner that is typical for pipe sinking and never before applied for sinking of tapered diffuser. The whole thing was even more difficult as diffuser had to be installed on the depth from 55 to 61 m. In order to achieve this, POMGRAD had to produce special reinforcements that were applied on reductions of tapered diffuser in order to protect them from increased loads and tensions during the sinking procedure. Significant amount of work and money has been saved with this type of diffuser sinking.
After Stobrec, Sibenik was second success story that Pipelife Norge had with POMGRAD on Croatian coast. All participants in this very demanding project were tested many times during its execution, but good team atmosphere based on high professionalism and mutual respect has provided perfect solution every time when it was needed. We can say for sure that, with participants in Sibenik Outfall Project, we shall cooperate in the future as well.
