Montpellier Sea Outfall Project in France completed

The deliveries and services from Pipelife Norge for the Montpellier outfall are now completed, and the installation of the pipe is ongoing.

This project has been a success for Pipelife Norge AS. The production was going very well; it started in September 2002 and was completed in early June 2003. The pipe deliveries were made in 4 tows with 5 pipes in each tow (totally 15 x 550 m+ 5 x 515 m), starting with the first tow in March and the last tow left Stathelle in August. The first 1100 m of pipe was installed in early June, and the installation continued in September after the holiday season. The welding of the special stubends and the diffuser risers in Séte harbour took place from August to early October. During this period the concrete collars were also assembled on the pipe sections. The dredging works continued in parallel.

By mid-November was about 7 km out of the total 11 km of ø1600 mm SDR26 PE100 pipe installed. The pipe installation is estimated to be completed by the end of November, if the weather conditions permit. The jointing of the pipe sections is made by using a specially designed GRP coupling and purpose built PE stubends. The actual jointing of two pipe sections takes only about two hours. The final work is then to install the concrete mattresses which shall protect the whole pipeline and also give the required weighting to ensure that the pipeline remains in the sea bottom even if it would be completely air filled, (which was a criterion for the installation).

It has been an honour for Pipelife Norge to be the supplier of this longest sea outfall project ever made in Europe. It is also the first sea outfall wich is constructed without any corrosive parts, as the pipeline is made of PE and the jointing couplings are made of GRP. We are also pleased to now see that the project delivery from Pipelife was made on time, at the agreed cost and without any claims or defects whatsoever. We are sure we have a pleased final Client, the Agglomération de Montpellier, and also a pleased contractor, the Consortium consisting of EMCC-Sogea Sud-Van Oord ACZ - Draflumar.
