Innovation, R&D and Product Management

Pipelife has put a stronger emphasis on innovation. We had the feeling that our process of idea generation and its "translation" into development projects needed to be optimized. Especially in such difficult times, under which our markets are currently suffering, Pipelife as a whole has to look into the future, look for the products/services that will generate tomorrow's profit. Therefore we started a new initiative in 2002: the PIN 2002. PIN stands for Pipelife INnovation and wants to identify the future value drivers and bring them into existence.

Innovation is not limited to products! We can be very innovative in many areas of our daily life. In business the concept can be applied to products and services. Innovation however is not a goal in itself it must be directed in order to amplify all other processes of a company. In our industry just as in all others, "to innovate" means constantly improve the solution to our customers' problems. The customer is the one to whom we dedicate our creative potential.

PIN 2002 represents this philosophy exactly: bringing people from different organizations, with different backgrounds together to work on the future rather than daily business.

And that is what Pipelife did. We have implemented an evaluation method for new ideas, with a team assigned to appraise every single incoming thought. An idea coordinator controls and supports this process. In 2002, within our Group, we have generated almost 500 new ideas.

Over 20 new projects have been initiated based on these ideas and the newly developed products - from fitting improvements in our sewerage range over a new Inspection Chamber concept to the Robust Pipe - are capturing the markets. Over 200 Pipelife employees have been involved in this process.

To further support this whole process, our Research & Development department has been enlarged with Local Application Departments (LAD) in 5 countries. We have organized the department vertically in core competencies with materials, extrusion, injection moulding and fittings, connected with Project Leadership.

We have combined our research with our Product Management and with that have increased and the quality of our market information.
