The Pipelife Group saw lots of record highs in 2019 but also a RECORD LOW we are very happy about: While our goal in business is usually to increase numbers, we do everything to decrease others such as the accident rate. Thanks to the strong commitment from business leaders and the local managements teams and thanks to the introduction of strong safety tools we are on the right track in protecting what makes up Pipelife: us, the people, the "Pipelifers".
What we do to protect our people
- One of our strongest preventive tools is probably our safety app. Everyone at Pipelife has access to this hazard reporting tool. How does it work? Whenever someone spots a hazard he or she can quickly and easily report it so that unsafe situations can be eliminated before anything bad happens.
- Internal auditing programs comprising cross auditing and self-assessment are in place at every Pipelife organization. The programs have a strong focus on the 5S of LEAN:
The 5S stand for 5 Japanese terms beginning with the letter "S". Following the simple principle of workplace organization, not only allows us to work more efficiently but clearly prevents accidents from happening.
Seiri: To separate needed tools, parts, and instructions from unneeded materials and to remove the unneeded ones.
Seiton: To neatly arrange and identify parts and tools for ease of use.
Seiso: To conduct a cleanup campaign.
Seiketsu: To conduct seiri, seiton, and seiso daily to maintain a workplace in perfect condition.
Shitsuke: To form the habit of always following the first four S's.
- A further helpful tool is a behavioral cooperation program where local managers and production staff put heads together for finding solutions to eliminate hazardous behavior in work processes.
A word from our Health and Safety Manager
"There is lots more we do but these are some of the main measures we have in place", says David Graham, Health and Safety Manager. "We are very happy about the progress but of course we ultimately want nobody to get hurt. To further increase safety, I believe we need to focus on proactively measuring what is done well to prevent accidents rather than counting incidents. We also need to learn from each other in the group by sharing best practice examples but also by discussing challenges."
