Nordic Poly Mark explained: Certified quality in all weathers

Two decades ago, the Nordic Poly Mark certification scheme was established for plastic pipe products distributed in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Since then, hundreds of certificates have been issued to manufacturers around the world, attesting to the high quality of their products and their suitability for installation even in extreme weather conditions. As Pipelife played a key role in launching the certification scheme, we explore the standards the Mark represents and how it has contributed to the high reliability of water infrastructure in the Nordic countries.

Nordic Poly Mark (NPM) is an internationally recognized quality mark for plastic pipe systems, certifying their suitability for the challenging Nordic climate.

What is Nordic Poly Mark?

Nordic Poly Mark (NPM) is an internationally recognized quality mark for plastic pipe systems. It is a registered EU trademark owned by the Nordic Plastic Pipe Association.

By choosing piping systems bearing the Nordic Poly Mark symbol, customers can be confident that the product has undergone extensive testing and is suitable for use in the demanding Nordic climate.

The product licensing is carried out by INSTA-CERT, a Nordic group of independent, third-party certification bodies. Established in 2004, the certification scheme safeguards the needs of end-users in the Nordic region by ensuring high-quality, weather-resistant and long-lasting water and sewage infrastructure.

How does Nordic Poly Mark certification work?

While obtaining Nordic Poly Mark certification is voluntary, its standards have become the benchmark for local norms and tenders in the Nordic countries. The certification applies to products from a single manufacturer and production site and is valid across all four Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

Manufacturers seeking certification must undergo a multistage inspection and testing process, evaluating not only the end products but also the manufacturing conditions and the production site. The certification requirements are based on both European standards and additional Nordic specifications.

The scope of testing is highly product-specific, as the scheme covers PP, PVC, and PE pipes as well as chambers and fittings. These tests ensure the certified products can withstand the challenging Nordic conditions during installation and reliably perform throughout their expected life span.

Even after certification is granted, manufacturers are required to conduct internal quality controls and submit to regular inspections carried out by independent testing bodies.

Why was Nordic Poly Mark established?

Historically, the harsh Nordic climate conditions influenced the standards and certification procedures used for piping systems in the region.

When unified product standards were gradually introduced across Europe, they often listed performance requirements that differed from Nordic countries, as most of the continent experiences milder weather.

To preserve the established construction practices, uphold national quality standards and maintain public trust in plastic piping systems, Nordic certification bodies, testing institutes, end-user associations and manufacturers collaborated to launch a common quality mark, replacing previously existing national certification schemes.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nordic Poly Mark, a special event was held in Aarhus, Denmark, in October 2024, bringing together past and current members of end-user associations, INSTA-CERT certification bodies, testing institutes and the Nordic Plastic Pipe Association.

Industry recognition and application

The Nordic Poly Mark has become the definitive quality mark for plastic sewage and drinking water pipe systems across the Nordic countries and beyond. The Mark's widespread adoption is a testament to the high Nordic quality standards it upholds, ensuring that certified plastic pipe products are fit for their purpose in even the most challenging conditions.

The Mark has also served as a catalyst for strong cooperation among key players in the plastic pipe industry. The NPM Board, comprising local representatives from Nordic Water Utility Associations and other owner organizations, such as raw material suppliers and plastic pipe producers of the region, meets regularly to oversee the Mark and drive several initiatives aimed at further strengthening its recognition.

Marking 20 years of uncompromised quality

In 2024, Nordic Poly Mark celebrated its 20th anniversary. Over the past two decades, the quality mark has earned international recognition and is now carried by thousands of products manufactured worldwide, including Pipelife systems produced at the company's plants in Finland, Norway and Sweden.

On October 29, a special event was held in Aarhus, Denmark, bringing together past and current members of end-user associations, INSTA-CERT certification bodies, testing institutes and the Nordic Plastic Pipe Association. As one of the key contributors to the certification scheme's development, Pipelife was honored to participate in the celebratory event.

As Nordic Poly Mark enters its third decade, its board remains committed to safeguarding and further developing the Mark's high standards — focusing on quality, innovation and meeting the challenges of tomorrow's water and wastewater infrastructure.

Questions and answers

The Nordic Poly Mark ensures high-quality standards for plastic pipe systems used in drinking water and wastewater applications. The Mark covers a wide range of products, such as PP, PVC, and PE pipes, chambers and fittings.

The certification is managed by INSTA-CERT — a Nordic group of independent certifier institutions. The certification requirements and procedures for each product group can be found at Insta-Cert's website.

If a product meets the NPM standard, it will bear the Mark's official logo. Additionally, all certified products are listed at INSTA-CERT's website.

Piping systems used in the Nordic climate must be able to withstand harsh weather conditions and perform reliably even in extremely low temperatures. Choosing certified products ensures their suitability for safe water handling even in extreme weather conditions.

The Mark is overseen by the NPM board. The board serves as an important forum for industry dialogue and collaboration, and plays an active role safeguarding and promoting the high-quality standards for plastic pipes in the Nordic countries. The NPM board also plays a role in strengthening Nordic cooperation among the key players of the plastic pipe business.
