Pipelife successfully invested in a production line in Hungary

Debrecen / October 2008 – Pipelife Hungária Kft. announces the successful investment of EUR 3 million in a multilayer pipe extrusion line for the manufacture of
Pex-Alu-Pex and PERT-Alu-PERT pipes for plumbing and heating applications. This investment is the first of its kind, not only for the Pipelife Group but also in Hungary.

This investment in its first multilayer pipe extrusion line will complete Pipelife’s manufactured product offering, especially in the rapidly growing market segment of hot and cold water applications. It also represents another milestone in the Group’s strategic development of applications for the Central and East European markets.

“In recent years, Pipelife has increased its focus on the growing segment of hot & cold water applications. This new investment is a perfect fit for our strategy and will support our goal to become the leading player in this product segment, above all in Eastern Europe”, explained Norbert Speiser, Chief Operating Officer for the CEE Region in the Pipelife Group. “Due to its central position in Eastern Europe and its experienced personnel, Pipelife Hungary has been selected as the optimal Pipelife location for this investment.”

“I am proud that we have been chosen to be the first company in the Pipelife Group to produce aluminum composite pipes. These quality products will allow us to conquer the hot & cold markets, not only in Hungary but also in other countries through our export activities”, commented Alexander Leutner, General Manager of Pipelife Hungária, on this major investment. “As the first producer of these pipes in Hungary, we also have a key responsibility to ensure top product quality coming from Eastern Europe and I am convinced we will meet this challenge.”

The new extrusion line will permit the production of five-layer pipes for sanitary, radiator and floor heating applications. Two types of materials can be processed: PEX-b and PE-RT. The heart of the pipes is formed by an aluminum layer, which not only increases pressure resistance and acts as an oxygen barrier but also gives the pipe greater form stability.

The Pipelife Group is a 50/50 joint venture between Wienerberger and Solvay. It is one of the leading plastic pipe and fittings groups in Europe. Pipelife is active in 28 countries and operates 29 plants with 2,900 employees. Revenues totaled EUR 875 million in 2007.
