18.5 km Expressway around Warsaw = 30 km Pipelife Pragma® Pipe System for Road Drainage
To bring traffic relief to Poland's capital Warsaw and to provide safer and more efficient connections for both national and international transport, the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) has initiated the finalization of a 40-km-long bypass, the expressway S2. The final 18.5-km-section is currently under construction. What is Pipelife's role in the project? To increase road safety with a reliable stormwater drainage system.
The final section of Warsaw's S2 express road, which forms the southern bypass around Poland's capital, is currently under construction thanks to EU funding. As beneficiary of the EU Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment 2014-2020, the project is co-financed with EU Cohesion Funds. The overall budget for the road is more than 1 billion Euros. Of this, almost 390 million Euros are supplied through the fund.
Running between the Puławska and Lubelska junctions, the section to be built has a total length of 18.52 kilometers and constitutes the south-eastern part of the bypass. It includes a 2.3-km-long tunnel, which takes it through Warsaw's Ursynów district, and a bridge across the Vistula river, 1.5 kilometers in length.
The construction works for this part of the S2 dual carriageway started in December 2015 on three stretches. Three to four lanes are planned to run on either side of a central reservation. While the width of the central variation varies between 5 and 12 meters, more space is being kept aside for future road expansion.
"A good road drainage system requires the efficient removal of rainwater from and around the road surface to prevent damages to the road and for the structures to remain dry and safe to drive on." says Karol Marzejon, Project Manager at Pipelife Poland, "One of the crucial factors in making a sustainable investment is choosing the right product. And I'm not speaking of high quality alone, this should be a matter of course. Take installation, for instance: Only a well installed system is a reliable one. It is extremely important to have a system, that is easy, fast and safe to install."
Contractors in Poland have been opting for Pipelife's corrugated Pragma+ID System as trusted solution for infrastructure projects for many years. The material's inherent advantages combined with the benefits of the products' design results in an extensive track record.
For the finalization of Warsaw's express road S2, Pipelife is delivering no less than 30 km of Pragma+ID corrugated PP stormwater pipes and fittings ranging from DN 200 to DN 1000. These will be installed by contractors and subcontractors such as Warbud, Astaldi, Gϋlermak Ağır Sanayi İnşaat ve Taahhüt, A.Ş and GP Mosty.
Some of the reasons for having chosen Pipelife stormwater systems:
• High load bearing capacity
• Easy handling, quick assembly thanks to light weight and design
• Installation at almost all times (down to -10°C)
• High chemical and abrasion resistance
• Proven reliability
Completion in 2020
S2 is scheduled to go into operation in September 2020. By leading the traffic away from the city, the express road will help reduce traffic jams and with this improve the residents' quality of life. The new section of the bypass will also provide faster, safer and more efficient connections for both national and international transport, thereby supporting Poland's economic development.
As only local producer of multi-layer Radopress hot and cold systems, Kontent can expect continued flexibility, short deliveries times and minimum quantities of products kept on stock.
